Some days we bounce out of bed, ready to attack the track, work the weights and kill the kettlebells. And then there are the days that we struggle to find time, energy or motivation to get the dog out for a walk or make it to our favorite yoga class.
Here are some tips passed along to me by my clients or I've found useful. Remember, it takes just one of these to get you movin' on any given day! Whatever works, right?
1. Change into your workout

It's about that time. The weather finally seems to be warming up and spring finally seems to have arrived in our area. We've fired up the grill and had our first BBQ of the year, hubby has done his spring yard cleanup and we're starting to actually OPEN the windows and enjoy the fresh air. Hurrah! It also means that it's time for some spring cleaning...inside the house.
Where to begin? It seems like we've been hibernating for the past 7 months or so and that stuff has accumulated just about everywhere. We've already designated a weekend to tackle the project and I've started making a list of particularly disastrous areas that need serious attention:

A decade ago, when I started freelancing, I realized that I could re-use paper... umm, yeah, DUH!
So all my paper that had something on just 1 side, I put in this light blue box. I kept using it and using it, recycling and recycling. I put it in my printer whenever I'm printing stuff out just for myself- rough drafts, articles to read, lists, etc.
Now my ‘one sided' paper box is empty, but here's the good part-
IT TOOK 10 YEARS!... A decade? Are you kidding me? I'm so excited. Now I'm realizing how very little paper I've bought in the past decade and how much of a difference my little recycling effort has made on my life and for the planet.
Happy (Belated) Earth Day!

For several weeks I have been hounding my kids about how messy the playroom was. I don't even mean messy - I mean catastrophic. This room looked like it had been vandalized. Seriously. The playroom is 80% of our basement. It has lots of storage and room to play. Basically it looked like the kids had taken every basket, box, container and dumped them all on the floor.
Finally last weekend (while DH was off working) K and I went down there during naptime for Big Man and B and decided to clean. I'd been at it about 5 minutes when I just felt rage. I was so angry at how messy this was and what a waste of my time it was cleaning it over and over only for it to get to this point again. I told K

Who doesn't want really white teeth?
What's amazing is that a decade ago the teeth whitening industry really didn't exist... My how things change...
Years ago, when you could only buy Go Smile whitening strips at Saks, I headed over there and went to pick myself up a package; one of my girlfriends worked there at the time and we asked her co-worker, who presided over the ‘Whitening/Moisturizing/Pamper Yourself' Counter if they worked well,
"I think Crest Whitestrips are the same, if not better."
And Crest Whitestrips ARE WAY less expensive.
So I put my money away, headed to my local drugstore and bought some Crest Whitestrips.
I have used these occasionally over the past few years...

I was thinking this morning about how you know when you are organized enough. My house definitely wouldn't fall into the minimalist, pristine category that I think a lot of people envision when they think of being organized.
John is fond of saying "physician, heal thyself" when I start talking my organizing talk. That's my cue to remind him that I can pretty much put my hands on whatever it is that he's searching for that day! Yes, he is one of those husbands. And, yes, I am one of those wives.
That's one of the reasons I love Kathy Waddill's book "The Organizing Sourcebook". Her approach calls for organizing with nine strategies of "reasonably organized people". I like that! You don't

RECIPE:
1 heaping tablespoon canned pumpkin
1 1/2 ounces sweetened condensed milk
2 ounces milk
1 ounce Fees Brothers Spiced Cordial Syrup
2 graham crackers
Graham cracker crumb rim and whipped cream
Grind graham crackers into fine crumbs in a food processor. Pour onto a small plate. On a separate plate, pour a small amount of spiced cordial syrup. Dip the rim of the martini glass into the syrup, then into the graham cracker crumbs, set aside. Vigorously shake milk, sweetened condensed milk, remaining spiced cordial syrup, and pumpkin into mixing glass, with ice. Slowly strain into rimmed martini glass. Top with a dollop of whipped cream.
This intoxicating (pun intended) delight can be found

About seven more weeks of kindergarten and our girl will be on her way to first grade. Hard to believe. I remember last summer feeling so ambivalent about letting her ride the school bus. She really, really wanted to ride the bus with all her neighborhood friends. I was having a hard time letting go of the prenatal through right-this-minute brainwashing we all undergo regarding the safety of our spawn in a moving vehicle. So I was just supposed to put my precious on a bus driven by a stranger with no seat belts whatsoever? One day she's in a five-point restraint and the next day she's totally free to be bounced right out the bus window in the event of a collision?!?
I did get over it. John

Call me crazy but I love to help organize kid's spaces! It's nice to play a small part in helping a child build good habits for keeping their space organized.
The National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) has some good tips for getting started organizing the children's areas of your home:
1. Have bins and boxes on lower shelves so that a child can put away the toys. Have the child label the bins and boxes.
2. Provide low hooks to hang up sweaters, pajamas, jackets, book bags, etc.
3. Take children with you when you go to donate unused items. This helps them learn to part with things.
4. Encourage your child to choose their outfits for the next day before they go to bed at night.

Ah, sunshine! I can't decide if being sick during yucky, gray days is better than being sick during gorgeous, sunny days. I had to take being sick during the yucky, gray days earlier this week. I do know that it made me really appreciate feeling well and able to enjoy beautiful days.
BTW, I can't believe I'm already acclimatized to Northern Virginia weather. I'd still be wearing sweaters (and truth be told, maybe even a coat!) in Austin on days like yesterday - a heretofore "chilly" 68 degrees! Instead, I was shucking off my jean jacket and going around in my short-sleeved shirt with my car windows down. I never noticed how many beds of tulips there are around Vienna. Nice.

If you have been under a rock, as I sometimes find myself,
or busy getting playdough out of the rug,
you may not have seen this video of Susan Boyle,
a 47-year-old unemployed woman who lives with her cat,
in a small village.
She was on Britain's Got Talent
AND SHE HAS THE VOICE OF AN ANGEL.
Warning: This will move you to tears, good tears.
Simon was even moved...
If you haven't heard her yet- Here she is...
What is so inspiring about her is that she reminds us that we all have a special gift inside us, that only we can bring to the world... discover and use your gift.
*I would have put the video right here but you cannot get it off of youtube anymore, you have to go to youtube and watch yourself,

So remember how Giggles has been going through a rough patch? For the past month or so, there has been a definite change in her behavior. She stopped wanting to go to ballet class, so we didn't make her go anymore. Then she started having potty accidents, which she never did before. She potty-trained super early (i.e. 27 months) and never looked back. Until now. And then last month, she decided that she didn't want to go to school anymore. We let her stay home a day here and a day there, and once she was at school she was totally fine and had fun. But she increasingly became more and more adamant about wanting to stay home. So we let her.
I figure she's still so young (she just turned 3) and

Thank you so much for all your thoughtful emails, tweets, and Facebook comments.
I am having a hard time finding my blogging and workout mojo these days. It's been two weeks since my mom died and I just cannot seem to pull myself together.
Since I am pretty sure that my mother would not want me to give up on this blog, (she came with me to BlogHer last summer and had been one of my biggest blog supporters), I promise to come back very soon.
I have a few guest posts to share and I'm always happy to accept more. (hint, hint)
As far as my own personal fitness, I feel like I am starting all over again. I have spent the better part of two weeks drowning my pain in every piece of comfort food that
