Buy Buy Baby has EVERYTHING that you would need for your new arrival. The store is brimming with every possible infant necessity. The store also carries an amazing stock of high-end baby clothes and shoes. The selection is great, but be warned clothing prices tend to be high on some items. Sign up for coupons and wait for a sale. Noteworthy, they have a wonderful staff that is always willing to help.
Carter's Outlet
Hagerstown, MD, Queenstown, MD and Leesburg, VA
Carter's Outlets are a great destination for in-season clothing. While you will find the same great prices at Kohl's, you typically have to wait for a mid-season sales and be at the mercy of the remaining stock. Do yourself a favor and get to any of the Carter's Outlet stores just before a season begins. The stock is full and the price is right. Locally you can find the outlet shops in Leesburg and Hagerstown.
Children's Place

Great "Baby on a budget" Shopping! While Children's Place can be hit or miss with its offering, I have always managed to find something cute, durable and inexpensive for my active toddler. Noteworthy, the sale rack are typically full of good deals.
Dawn Price Baby
Capitol Hill & Georgetown
Washington DC
Dawn Price Baby brings a delightful twist to your neighborhood baby boutique. I was thrilled to find this DC shop offered moderately priced items on a number of adorable and creative baby wares. Dawn Price offers an extensive and eclectic mix of nursery furnishing, baby gear, clothing and one-of-kind expectant mother products such as the Pregnancy Casting Kit. The store has a flavor for the whimsical. The hand painted personalized ceramic birth certificates are irresistible! As you would expect of any boutique, there are a number of high priced, upscale items. I wouldn't sell this as a "budget friendly" resource. This is an exceptional venue for unique baby gift! P.S. the G-town store resides in the former K-Baby Store location.
This chic baby boutique was born in 2006. Founder Mellika Coffey set out to create a baby boutique offering only precious, high quality baby products that embraced her design philosophy. She also needed a company that would accommodate her commitment to family (did I mention her 6 kids!!). Fiona’s Closet features a variety of soft and beautiful infant/baby clothing, accessories and furniture that are thoroughly mom inspected and approved. Most products can go through the washer and dryer (no wimpy one-time uses for Fiona). Noteworthy, under the heading of “too cool” Fiona’s Closest puts together Trunk Shows for Baby Showers, Baby Boutique Parties and Mommy Groups. That’s right, you provide the group and Fiona’s Closet will bring the clothes and accessories. For baby showers, they even provide a diaper cake! Go online and check out Fiona’s Closet at www.fionascloset.com.
Gap Kids
Check website for DC Metro locations
Absolutely adorable! Gap Kids has a wonderful selection of clothing for your little ones. What I most enjoy about Gap Kids is the thoughtful selection of clothing that seems more mainstream than most kids clothes. The items aren’t dripping with bows and oversized smiling animals. It definitely gives Junior a more "preppy" look. Noteworthy, sales rack abound throughout the store. Given the layout of most Gap stores, I would recommend a solo mall march to ferret out the best deals in the store.
Gymboree
Check website for DC Metro locations
As a new mommy I knew little about Gymboree. Only after trial and error did I learn all about the coveted coupons and sale event notices that can be obtained through the store's website or #800 number. In addition to some great sales, the store also offers the magical GymBucks. Throughout the year Gymboree runs promotions that allow you to accrue Gymbucks. It goes something like this, for every $50.00 you spend, you receive $25.00 worth of Gymbucks that can be used for merchandise at a later time. It can be economical if you are a fan of the store. Noteworthy, go immediately to the sale racks! They run their items through faster than The Gap. I buy my little one's Christmas dresses in January for the next holiday season. A beautiful dress that retailed for $49.00 was purchased for $6.99. Now that is a bargain!
H&M Kids
Check website for DC Metro locations
Think European Old Navy. H&M has a great selection of adult and kids clothing. It was a great surprise to find a nice stash of women's jeans that didn't break the bank. Plus where else can you find a cute dress for under $30.00? The funky backdrop and clothing options make it a bit more "adult" versus Old Navy. Don't be put off by the young median age of the shoppers, there are still bargains and stylish everyday wear to be found for moms of all ages. Noteworthy, the store has a wonderful selection of infant, toddler and children's clothing. There is definitely a "posh tot" feel to the kids wear. Even the girl's overalls have an edge. I have found some of the cutest dresses for my little one. The best part, the prices are great! FYI, H&M Kids is only available at select stores.
Hanna Andersson
On the web
Adorable, well-made clothing for the whole family. I have talk to no less than 15 mommies who swear by Hanna Andersson. Colors never fade and unlike some kids clothing, Hanna's products weather the test of time. The clothes are a little pricey, but worth it. Shop for sale items online. These clothes are the quintessential hand-me down. Noteworthy, Hanna Andersson now has a storefront in Tyson's Corner Mall.
Hiccups
1616C Rockville Pike
Rockville MD 20852
301-816-0016
Adorable kids gear and clothing. This is a sweet shop that brings a very personal touch to its offering. You won't get that "chain store" feeling in this shop. Noteworthy, unlike many stores, Hiccups offers personalized items for a new arrival or a special event for Junior.
Janie and Jack
Check website for DC Metro locations
For those that aren't familiar with Janie & Jack, think of them as a Gymboree's upscale cousin. The store is presented like a small boutique complete with an antique wrought iron crib. The dresses are beautiful. The shoes are unique and fun. Special note, the sizes tend to run a bit smaller and tighter than most major brands. Noteworthy, the sale racks are wonderful. I normally stalk the rounders in January where I can find a $90.o0 Christmas dress reduced to $25.00. Happy shopping!
Kohl's
Check website for DC Metro locations
What a great surprise. Awesome kids clothes, Carter's gear is often marked down to outlet prices. I have found the cutest dresses for my little without the Janie & Jack prices. Search the sale racks early and often. Noteworthy, Kohl's credit card holder receive numerous coupons and sale notices throughout the year.
L.L. Bean
Stores in MD, VA and on the web
For years I thought that this Maine (pun intended) stay among clothing retailers was a bit too dull for me. In recent years I have changed my tune. Maybe it is my age or just the yearning for a great product and an awesome customer service, but I am now a devoted shopper! After having my daughter, I discovered that the store offers a great selection of plain tees that wear and wash well for everyday errands. The kid’s gear including seasonal shoes, gloves, pjs and more are all available at great prices. I have also been able to find a number of business casual shirts for my hubby. Customer service is excellent! Plus L.L. Bean stands by its wares and will replace any item that breaks before its time. Sign up for the catalog or stop by the local stores. Note, monograming and free shipping come standard with the L.L Bean Visa.

Leesburg Corner Outlets
241 Fort Evans Road NE
Leesburg VA 20176
703-737-3071
In a word "FABULOUS"! I fell for this outlet mall when I was still searching for Jones of New York bargains. Now with a toddler, my trips are more geared to Gymboree and Carter's. I consider this outdoor outlet to be one of the best in DC area. It has an excellent section dedicated to all things home. It has an all-star line-up of Williams Sonoma, Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, Bombay Company, Restoration Hardware and more! Shopping for hubby, they have a generous assortment of men's business clothing, shoes and accessories. Check out the website for more information. Noteworthy, both Pottery Barn and Williams-Sonoma will accept "Pottery Barn Family" issued gift cards in their outlet stores.
Macy's
Check website for DC Metro locations
And then there was Macy's. In the monopoly minded world of big retail stores, Macy's seems to be winning the battle. From the New England to Chicago and many more parts in between, Macy's is taking over for existing stores like Filene's, Hecht's and Kauffman's. Despite eating up the competition, I remain pleasantly surprised that Macy's has maintained it reputation for high-end wares at reasonable prices. I use to live in their petite department for all my business needs. I have grown to love the children's' section as well. The store always seems to be a bit low on help, but a self-help gal will walk away with a bargain in hand. Noteworthy, Macy's is ALWAYS running a sale. Sign up on line to be notified about discounts and coupons.
Marshall's
Check website for DC Metro locations
Great discount destination for family gear, home needs, shoes, knick-knacks and more. Shop early and often. The good stuff tends to go quickly. I been fortunate to find some really cute Ralph Lauren dresses for my daughter. They also have some inexpensive options for your early postpartum figure. Who wants to spend a fortune on clothes that will hopefully be packed away...soon! Noteworthy, clothing can be tricky for kids and adults. With hundreds of designer, sizing will vary. If Junior won't try on his gear in the store make sure your purchases are tested at home and keep your receipt just in case. Bonus, they have a decent menswear section filled with dress shirts and ties that won't empty your wallet.
Nordstrom's
Check website for DC Metro locations
Nordstrom is simply the best! Oh how I long for the day when Nordstrom was a mandatory stop for many of my wardrobe needs. With the absence of my former salary, my shopping excursions have dropped off considerably. Still, this is one of the best destinations for clothing and shoes that I found in the area. Their shoe selection is amazing. Surprisingly, prices are moderate for some clothing and women’s shoes. Kid's shoes to be a bit pricey. I love their MAC and Kiehl's make-up counters! The staff is typically very nice. If up-scale chic is what you are after, There is no shortage of high-end wares. They have a great selection of Spanx under garments. For those who had a baby, you are undoubtedly familiar with the uber cool Spanx under garments. Last note, check out the two spectacular sales annually.
Old Navy
Check website for DC Metro locations
Ahh...remember when you thought you had graduated from Old Navy to the Gap and then onto Banana Republic. Well guess what, if you have given up your job for your bundle(s) of joy, something tells me that you are returning to the scene of the crime. I rediscovered Old Navy while I was pregnant. I continue to shop the inexpensive Gap spin-off for everything including my baby clothes, workout gear, maternity wear and everything summer. It won't disappoint! Noteworthy, you can shop online for a better selection of maternity wear. As an FYI, you can return online purchases to any Old Navy store.
One Step Ahead
On the web
Think Brookstone for kids. This catalog is filled with gizmo's and gadget for infants to toddlers. I honestly thought this was a little silly considering all of the local baby stores in the DC Metro area. I will admit, I have grown to love One Step Ahead. They have an awesome booster seat that travels and washes well. They also have great accessories for the tub. Yes, this is now the time that you will be excited by an electronic nasal aspirator. This is the catalog that will show what you will need before you realize that it is a "must have". Enjoy the brave new world of infants☺
Prime Outlets
Hagerstown, MD and Queenstown, MD.
Everything from kitchen to kids gear. You might even find a new coach purse. With Maryland locations in Hagerstown and Queenstown it is reasonably close and worth the trip. Noteworthy, if you have a AAA card, go to the information desk and receive a complimentary coupon book.
Queen's Baby Boutique
12639 Georgia Avenue
Silver Spring MD 20906
301-509-4083
Interesting boutique items for little ones. Queens Baby Boutique also has a nice selection of online gear that will save you the trip to Silver Springs. Clever line up of Tee Hee's a.k.a. "The Whimsical T-Shirt". They also have a gorgeous selection of reasonably priced hand painted and beaded dresses. Noteworthy, overall the prices are very reasonable for a designer shop. Check out their sale items for a real deal.
T.J. Maxx
Check website for DC Metro locations
This discount den had such success with their house wares section that they started HomeGoods. Both stores offer brand names for far less than retail counterparts. Great selection of children's clothing, toys, etc. They also stock plenty of wares for mommy, kitchen, and special holiday accessories.
Target
Check website for DC Metro locations
This mega-store serves up everything from clothes to groceries. I love their Liz Lange maternity wear. I wasn't willing to spend $150.00 for a dress at Pea in a Pod. My Liz Lange gear held up well and didn't require a lot of ironing. Some kid’s clothing prices are a bit high. A better option is Kohl's. Target does get high marks for their Robeez knockoffs, which are 70% less than the brand name shoe. Diapers and formula are moderately priced, but are cheaper at wholesale clubs. NOTE, Target gets a big “Thumbs Down” on their baby furniture and web sales. Their return policies make gift registries a nightmare! Target is best for knick-knacks, cards, toiletries, clothing accessories and outdoor items. Be sure to check out the book shelves, storage solutions and robust toy selection. The toy section is easier to navigate than Toys R Us.
Tea Collection
On the web
Fabulously fancy duds for kidlets. The store offers up designer collections replete with mini-attitude. Despite the hype, the clothes really are cute. Prices are communsurate with boutique shops and high-end retail chains. Noteworthy, order a catalog through the website. A clever and thoughtful selection of fashion wares are available for infants, boys and girls.

A loyal customer base has enabled this fledgling chain to continue to expand. Check the web site to see the most updated listing of store locations and events.
Wal-Mart
Check website for DC Metro locations
Forget the "bomb shelter", in case of an emergency just head to Wal-Mart. We all know the drill, the store carries everything that one would need for LIFE! House wares, clothes, food, cards, crafts, tires, propane, etc. This store is truly all things to all people. If you are after a bargain for Junior there is no shortage of reasonably priced kids wear, shoes, toys, kids’ videos and electronics! Noteworthy, I will be honest, while Wal-Mart is heaven for a lot of folks, I tend to stay away from the mega-store. I find that the lines are long, the racks are overcrowded and the parking lots are mayhem. Still, if you are after one stop shopping and a great price you will want to hit this store. Just go early to avoid the crowds☺
