Amphora
DC Metro locations
Amphora is the 24 hour diner that happens to have an amazing bakery. I had always know Amphora as a Vienna Diner that made a great cake. After some research I discovered that Amphora has an excellent reputation as a great local bakery and also as a catering service. Holidays, wedding, and special events are all covered. I love the cakes, my husband still longs for the eggs benedict at 4am.

Here it is the mecca of DC Farmers' Markets. The market has one of the largest assortment of wares that I have seen at a farmers' market. There are parking lot filled to the brim with local artisans' work, antiques and crafts. From there you graduate onto a number of local outdoor street vendors with an assortment fresh vegetables, fruit and even clothing at some stations. Finally make your way into the circa late 1800s South Hall market building. It is alive with activity and filled with meats, cheeses, flowers and lots of tasty made-to-order foods. The farmers' market is open year round, six days a week.

Absolutely sinful is the best way to describe Edible Incredibles. While planning my daughter's Christening celebration, I discovered this cozy little dessert haven in Reston Town Center. The store has become extremely popular since opening its doors in 2003. The shop's owners are wonderful people that want nothing more than please their customers. Even the folks at the Washington Post have given major kudos to this cozy establishment. Note, the store dishes up complimentary cake and candy tastings the last Sunday of every month from 1pm - 4pm.

It just doesn't get any better than Juniors. I was first introduced to Junior's via a Valentine's Day gift. Based in NYC, this 50+ year establishment branched out to the web. Orders can be placed online.

Simply the best the pie I have ever tasted! Despite having lived in Northern Virginia for close to a decade, I had never heard of Mom's. During a trip to Old Town Leesburg, my husband and I discovered this gem. Mom's bakes pies fresh everyday with all natural ingredients that are grown on the family farm in Leesburg. After sampling the amazing offering of pies and cookies, it was easy to see why Mom's has fan everywhere. Food Network did a great segment on the shop on Road Tested DC. Even the folks on Food Network fell in love with the blackberry pie. Everything is so good and the staff is wonderful! Noteworthy, if you can't make it to Leesburg, Mom's has shops in Sterling and Herndon. Yum!

Sticky Fingers Bakery is a rare find. This bakery has managed to do the impossible and create an amazing sticky bun that is dairy-free, egg-free and gluton free. The shop was recently featured on Food Network's Road Tested program. Paula Deen's boys loved these sticky buns and they typically don't spare any calories in their food choices. Locals are also raving about this small shop in DC on Park Street, NW. It has a cult like following with customers who have dairy and/or egg allergies. Noteworthy, attention all vegans’, Sticky Fingers offers a great line up of mac-n-cheese, veggie chili dogs and lots of dairy-free, egg-free sweets. Who would have thought soy could taste this good?
